Abstract
1328015 Rotary tool heads CLARKE CHAPMAN-JOHN THOMPSON Ltd 23 June 1972 [26 June 1971] 30070/71 Heading B3T In a method of removing flash from an article formed by friction welding in which two parts of the article are located coaxially, one is held stationary and the other rotated about their common axis and moved axially into engagement with the stationary part to effect a friction weld uniting the parts, a rotary cutter head is provided to remove the flash produced during the weld and which extends transversely to the axis of the ports. The rotary cutter head is mountable on a rotary part 10 of the welding apparatus (not shown) and is rotatable relative thereto and is formed by an annular member 17 which supports an annular member 16 for rotation thereon. A tool carrying arm 13 is pivotally mounted on the member 16 and has a cam follower 22 which engages in a cam groove 19 in the member 17. The members 16 and 17 are provided with peripheral gear teeth 16a, 17a respectively, the numbers of teeth being different so that when the members are driven by gear (not shown) from a motor, relative movement is effected between them and the cam follower 22 traverses the cam groove 19 to cause the radial in feed of the cutting tool 11 as the head rotates around the welded joint to remove the flash.
