Abstract

1326030 Photographic polyolefin surfaced support and antistatic layer EASTMAN KODAK CO 22 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50278/70 Heading G2C [Also in Division B2] A photographic support has an aliphatic polyolefin surface and an anti-static coating thereon which comprises a mixture of from 4 to 25% by weight of a water-soluble amonic film-forming polyelectrolyte, from 16 to 35% by weight of a polyalkylene oxide, and sufficient colloidal silica to make the coating free of tackiness. The polyolefin surface may be modified by corona discharge before the antistatic coating is placed thereon. The corona discharge is preferably one of 25, 000 to 50, 000 peak volts. The support may be paper having an extruded polyolefin on each side and the anti-static coating on one polyolefin surface. The polyolefin is preferably polyethylene or polypropylene or a blend thereof or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. The polyelectrolyte may be an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt of polymethacrylic acid, of cellulose sulphate, of polyvinyl phosphate or of a partially esterified lactone of a vinyl alcohol -α, #- dicarboxylic acid copolymer. The polyalkylene oxide may have 2-4C alkylene units and have a molecular weight of 200-1000. The coating may comprise 50-80% by weight colloidal silica. The coating preferably comprises by weight 4% polyelectrolyte, 30% polyalkylene oxide and 66% colloidal silica. The surface resistivity of the polyolefin surface is sufficiently reduced so that very high speed emulsions coated thereon are not affected by any low level static discharges occurring in handling the product.
