Abstract

132,337. Clark, L. Sept. 9, 1918. Hydrocarbons, distilling and cracking.-Hydrocarbon oils are distilled or converted into products of lower boiling-point by supplying the oil by a pipe 10 into a pipe 9 along which gases of combustion escape from a chamber 1, in which oil or gas from a nozzle 2 is burnt under pressure in a current of air from a pipe 3. The temperature and velocity of the gases are controlled by valves 4, 11, 12 to obtain temperature from 1050 to 1800‹ F. or higher, and velocities from 50 to 6000 feet per minute, and may also be varied by introducing materials such as steam, oil, gas, sand, &c. into the pipe 9 through a pipe 13. To start the combustion in the chamber 1, a current of gases is drawn through the chamber by opening a valve 6 in a side conduit 7 and injecting air or steam through a nozzle 8.
