Alternatively, compressed air may be directed into the containers to supprt them, by air motors located in the proximity of each stamping position. The dies may be stationary and form part of the plate 33, Fig. 17. Only the projecting parts of the designs on the die faces extend below the bottom surface of the plate 33, and the rest of the die faces and the plate are coated with a heat-insulating plastic or resin. The dies are heated by closure cartridge heaters 223. In another form, Fig. 11, the containers are carried in an arcuate path past a rotary heated die roller 82 projecting through an opening in the plate 33. In this form, the transfer foil may be replaced by a tape 55a carrying the design in a heat-transferrable material, the design being transferred to the containers by a plain heated roller 82. The rollers 21, 21<SP>1</SP> are supported in bearings which allow vertical (Fig. 7) or radial (Fig. 11) play but not horizontal or circumferential play. The rollers have a resilient surface portion, and also the plates 20, 33 may be mounted so as to allow tilting axially of the containers to accommodate irregularly-shaped, e.g. frusto-conical, containers. In one arrangement, only the leading roller of each pair is supported on the chains, while the trailing roller is connected to the leading roller so as to be at adjustable distance therefrom. Alternatively, a shaft carried by the chains supports a pair of swivelly mounted bearing bars having slots to support the shafts of the two rollers of each pair and to support the cross-shaft, so that both rollers trail behind their attachment to the chains.
