Abstract
1321073 Gas turbine engines; acoustic attenuators DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 11 June 1971 [18 June 1970] 29531/70 Heading F1J [Also in Division F2] A gas turbine engine acoustic attenuator comprises an acoustic panel which includes at least a porous facing layer through which a variable flow of air is passed, the impedance of the acoustic panel being varied by varying the supply of air through the porous layer. One such acoustic panel comprises an impervious backing layer 30, a number of channels 32 defined by dividers 34, and a porous facing layer 36. In order to vary the impedance of the panel air is pumped along the channels 32 and through the apertures 38 in the facing layer, the mass flow of air depending upon the particular engine conditions for which the panel is being tuned. The panel may alternatively be of the honeycomb type providing there is communication between adjacent cells.
