Abstract
1319723 Quick-opening fulcrum package H R HELLSTROM 5 May 1971 13357/71 Heading B8C A quick-opening fulcrum package 20, Fig. 1 comprises a layer 22 of relatively stiff materia such as plastics in which are formed at least one article receiving pocket 24 and a pair of reinforcing ridges 26, 28, and an overlying layer 32 of a frangible material such as a thin sheet of aluminium, or P.V.C., which is designed to rupture when the package is bent, away from the layer 32 about a medial, preferably weakened, fold line 34, to release the article in the pocket 24. As shown, Figs. 1, 2A, the reinforcing or stiffening, ridges 26, 28 are U-shaped and adjoin pocket, or blister, extensions 36 38 to aid in spreading the latter and initiate the rupture of the frangible layer 32. The stiffening ridges 26, 28 can be formed as separate members secured to the layer 22 and, where the layer 22 is of sufficient thickness, the bight portions 42 of the stiffening ridges 26, 28 can be omitted and additional ridges (56, 58) Fig. 2C not shown, can adjoin the main walls of the blister 24 at junction 48. Bight portions (42<SP>1</SP>) can be added. The ends of the blister may be tapered and it may be shaped, at its centre, to accommodate a rounded article, the blister extensions 36, 38 being omitted, Figs. 3, 5 not shown. In another arrangement the blister is arranged transversely of the longitudinal dimension of the package, Fig. 7 not shown. A series of packages 20, Fig. 1, may be formed in strip form, perforated tear lines being provided between adjacent packages. In a package, Fig. 8, rupture of the layer 22 over the pocket is initiated by means of inserts 108, 110 in the stiffening ridges (112, 114) which are integral with the blistered layer 116 and which preferably project into the blister extensions 118, 120. The inserts have sharp edges 122. Instead of the inserts 108, 110 the blister extensions 118, 120 can have their walls deformed inwardly. In an alternative arrangement the stiffening ridges can be strengthened by filling members. Ruptureinitiating inserts (128, 130), Fig. 9, not shown, can be disposed along the main wall surfaces of the blister (132) and between a pair of articles (134, 136). Rupture-initiating inserts, or extensions, can be inserted inside adjacent the ends of a blister in which case blister extensions, such as 36, 38, Fig. 1, can be omitted and the blister can be made correspondingly longer. When the blister is substantially wider it can be provided with a number of transverse stiffening ribs. In a further-embodiment the ruptureinitiating means comprises an opening ridge which extends longitudinally along the length of the pocket and which has sharp upper edge. The opening ridge divides the blister into two two side-by-side article-receiving compartments. The opening ridge may be replaced by one, or more, opening prongs (210), Fig. 14A, not shown.
