Abstract

1317779 Laminates M C GILL 4 Aug 1970 37588/70 Heading B5N A process for making a laminated fibre glass panel includes the steps of wrapping each one of a plurality of mandrels 13 individually in a respective glass cloth 14 impregnated with curable resin; positioning the wrapped mandrels in side-by-side relationship to form a planar assembly; placing on one side of the assembly, a sheet 10 comprising an overlay of a number of continuous plies of glass cloth impregnated with a curable resin; curing the resin material under heat and pressure and then cutting away sections of the glass cloth on the side of the planar assembly opposite the sheet to form a plurality of beam members 20 depending from the sheet and removing at least part 18 of the mandrels. The thermosetting resin may be an epoxy, polyester or silicone resin. The mandrels may be made of polyurethane foam. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the free end 16 of each cloth 14 is extended past the edge of the mandrel 13 round which it is wrapped in such a manner as to overlap the adjacent mandrel and bundles 11 of glass roving interposed between the sheet and assembly of wrapped mandrels, said bundles being positioned over the junctions between adjacent mandrels to provide fillet material. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3, the size of the sections 17 cut from the lower skin is such as to leave portions 19 of sufficient width to provide a lower flange for each beam member 20, the side portions 21 of the mandrels being optionally removed. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the mandrels which may be of wood or metal are formed in sections to obviate cutting thereof.
