Abstract

1317178 Polycarbonate films GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 6 July 1970 [7 July 1969 8 May 1970] 32708/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Films having special surface properties are cast from a composition comprising a base aromatic polycarbonate (A) and 0À1-5À0% wt, based on (A), of a block-copolymer additive (B) comprising:-polycarbonate blocks (C) having average block length of # 3 monomer units, and polydimethyl siloxane blocks (D) having average bond length of # 5 monomer units. Polycarbonate blocks (C) are compatible with and miscible in base polycarbonate (A), thus rendering additive (B) stable in (A); and polydimethyl siloxane blocks (D) are sufficiently surface-active in the composition to provide a desired surface characteristic. (A) may be a polycarbonate of bisphenol-A. Block copolymer (B) may be graft, branched, or linear. The desired surface characteristic may be water repellency or friction reduction. The films may be cast from solutions of the composition in methylene chloride, on to glass, glass coated with dimethyl silicone, mica, or PTFE. The cast films may then be annealed, or a solvent for (A) may be applied to the surface, so that (B) migrates to the composition surface.
