Abstract
1315462 Coating apparatus H H WALKER 14 May 1971 [15 May 1970 10 May 1971] 15092/71 Heading B2L [Also in Division B3] A workpiece tumbling apparatus comprises a container 14 having an outer enclosing wall 54 of a construction having openings capable of admitting a working spray, and inner partition walls 60 also of a construction having openings dividing the container into a number of compartments. The container is mounted for rotation in the upper part of a -housing 10 above an impeller 28 having blades for shot received from a hopper 42 upwardly towards the container, the impeller being driven by a belt 36 from a motor 38. The container consists of end plates 50 which are mounted by couplings 80 on shafts 82 and interconnected by rods 52. The wall 54 consisting of expanded metal or wire mesh extends around the rods to form the container. Inner rods 56 and divider walls also of expanded metal or wire mesh divide the container into compartments, and each compartment has its own hinged door 62 for permitting loading and unloading of articles into the compartments; the workpieces loaded into one compartment may be of a different size to those loaded into another so that heavy workpieces do not damage lighter workpieces during tumbling. According to the size of the workpieces, the rods 54, 56 may be spaced to prevent passage of workpieces therebetween in which case the expanded metal or wire mesh 54, 60 maybe dispensed with. The container is driven by a belt 90 from a motor which also drives an air lock 95 of a cyclone tank 94 having an inlet conduit 96 for receiving shot and dust from the housing 10 and a conduit 98 for returning shot to the housing. Dust is passed to a collector 102 by a fan 104 in a conduit 100 connected to the upper end of the cyclone. In another embodiment, the rods between the discs of the container are easily adjustable to form compartments of different sizes and wire mesh screens may be placed in radial planes of the container to form smaller axially arranged partitions.
