1309332 Substituted pentenes J A FINDLAY 6 Jan 1970 [6 Jan 1969] 40011/72 Divided out of 1309331 Heading C2C Compounds of formula where X is a 1-hydroxypropyl or formyl group, i.e. 5-methyl-4-hepten-1-al and 7-methyl-6- nonen-3-ol are prepared by treating 3-methyl- 1-penten-3-ol with ethyl vinyl ether in the presence of a catalyst (phosphoric acid) to give α-ethoxyethyl ether of 3-methyl-1-penten-3-ol and heating the α-ethoxyethyl ether in the presence of a catalyst (phosphoric acid) to give an aldehyde and reacting with a Grignard reagent to give the hydroxyl compound. The 3- methyl-1-penten-3-ol is prepared from 2-butanone and sodium acetylide.
