1306493 Aromatic sulphenamides and benzisothiazolin-3-ones derived therefrom SHERWIN-WILLIAMS CO 27 April 1971 [27 April 1970 (2)] 11724/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises novel sulphenamides (I) and a process for making therapeutic benzisothiazolin-3-ones (V) by cyclizing (I) at 0‹ to 200‹ C. (I) are themselves obtained by halogenating (II) or (III) and subsequently reacting the compound (IV) obtained with RNH 2 ; R is H, a C 1 to C 20 hydrocarbon group, C 1 to C 8 hydroxyalkyl, a haloaromatic hydrocarbon group wherein the halogen atom is attached to the aromatic nucleus, or a hydroxyaryl; alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, alkoxycycloalkyl or alkoxyaryl group, or a pyridyl or pyrimidyl group which is attached to the nitrogen atom through a valency on a carbon atom of the nuclear ring, R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 to C 20 hydrocarbon group, Y is Cl, Br, NO 2 ,<SP> </SP>alkoxy, COOR<SP>1</SP>, an aryloxy, oycloalkoxy or optionally substituted hydrocarbon group containing not more than 20 carbons and wherein the substituent is alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, aryloxy, Cl or Br (the halogen is attached to an aromatic nucleus in the hydrocarbon group), or Y is a divalent group comprising a naphthalene nucleus, n is 0, 1 or 2 and X is Cl or Br.
