Abstract

1306129 Bonded fibre fabrics EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 21 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969 17 June 1970] 40482/70 Headings C3B B1D2C and B1N1A A carded, garnetted or air laid web of staple polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres, or blends thereof, or with other fibres is optionally needled and then bonded with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of 55 to 97% of ethylene and 3 to 45% of an alphabeta unsaturated carboxylic acid, the copolymer being cross-linked with 1 to 25% of an epoxy or phenol-formaldehyde resin. (All percentages are by weight). Preferably the unsaturated acid is acrylic or methacrylic, and 0-75% of the carboxyl groups are in the form of the sodium salt. The resin is melamine-formaldehyde, hexamethoxymethyl melamine or bisphenol A epichlorohydrin. I to 25% of a cross-linking catalyst such as ammonium chloride, bromide or oxalate, or triethylene tetramine is added. The saturated web is twice patted between paper towel, passed through a wringer then dried and cured in a forced hot air oven at 120-200‹C. The binder comprises 2-50% of the dry web.
