Abstract
1304522 Impregnating permeable materials NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 1 Dec 1970 [6 Sept 1969] 44198/69 Heading F2A [Also in Division C1] A carbon brush comprises an array of laminations of carbon fibre cloth aligned parallel to each other and bonded together by adhesive layers, electrically conducting metal particles being dispersed generally throughout the brush or concentrated in layers deposited as a backing on the carbon fibre cloth laminations. The laminations may be bonded together with an epoxy or a silicone resin suitably cured. Adjuvants, i.e. friction reducing additives, may comprise graphite or a combination of graphite and silver flake. The layers of metal particles may be produced by vapour deposition, spraying, or electroplating. Alternative bonding agents are polytetrafluoroethylene or a mixture of pitch and tar. The electrically conducting particles used may be silver flake or silver plated copper flake. The carbon cloth used is cut on the bias to prevent long fibres detaching during wear. Electrical connection may be made to the brush by metal spraying the ends remote from the contact surface and brazing on a top cap to the sprayed end.
