Abstract
1302535 Propelling vehicles J G LEWIS 22 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969] 53115/69 Heading B7H [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for transporting loads comprises a plate 10 to which are attached sets of parallel inflatable bags 1, 2, 3. As shown, the plate 10, with load (not shown), has been lifted by inflating the set 1. The set 2 is now inflated, the reaction between the sets 1, 2 causing the plate 10 to move slightly to the right, Fig. 1b (not shown). The set 1 is next deflated, the set 2 taking over the full load and assuming a symmetrical shape, the plate 10 moving again slightly to the right. Set 3 is next inflated followed by deflation of set 2, causing further movement to the right. The whole cycle is then repeated. Similar sets of parallel inflatable bags may be attached to either side of a base-plate, Fig. 9 (not shown), in which case the device may insert itself under a load or remove itself from underneath a load by simultaneous operation of both sets. Such a device may transport a load (after inserting itself underneath it) by interrupting the operation of the upper bags. At the destination operating the upper bags and interrupting the operation of the lower bags may be used to discharge the load. In a modification of this arrangement the two layers extend at rightangles to provide movement in two directions. In a further embodiment, Fig. 12 (not shown), the device comprises a multiplicity of pockets arranged in an orthogonal matrix. The pockets may be inflated individually to provide movement in either of the two perpendicular directions in which the rows of pockets extend. A load can thus be guided in confined spaces and around bends. Non-planar conveyer mats may be provided to suit particular applications such as conveying barrels or boat hulls. If of annular construction the bags may enter and possibly plug a pipe or convey articles through a pipe, or a pipe may be moved along an internal supoorting bar.
