Abstract

1299480 Hot melt adhesive compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 20032/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] Hot melt adhesive compositions for preparing joining tapes comprise a free flowing mixture of (a) solid particles, capable of passing through a 500 micron mesh sieve, of a tack resin and (b) solid particles, also capable of passing through a 500 micron mesh sieve, of copolymer of ethylene with a monomer containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, and one carbon to carbon double bond, the weight ratio of the tack resin to ethylene copolymer being from 4 : 1 to 2 : 5. The comonomer in the ethylene copolymer may be vinyl acetate, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or lauryl alkyl esters of these. The tack resin may be a fully or partially hydrogenated wood resin ester which may be esterified with, for example, glycerol or pentaerythritol, coumarone-indene resins, petroleum-derived hydrocarbon resins, permanently fusible phenolic resins, copolymers of alphamethyl styrene vinyl toluene, "formolite resins" and polydiene resins. The adhesive may also include powdered materials such as waxes and fillers, e.g. talc, chalk, whiting, clay, silica, dolomite, titanium dioxide or barium sulphur. A powdered foaming agent such as N,N<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl - N,N<SP>1</SP> - dinitrosoterephthalimide or p,p<SP>1</SP> - oxybis (benzene sulphonhydrazide). A cross-linking agent such as di-cumyl peroxide or 1,3 - bis - (alpha, alpha - dimethyl - tbutylperoxy - methyl) benzene may also be present. The tape to which the adhesive may be applied may be of hessian, polyolefin film, especially polypropylene, woven synthetic fibres such as nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, or polypropylene, and felts.
