Abstract

1298488 Container ships; tank wagons; vehicle bodies M R Y KASSRAVI 18 Nov 1970 [20 Nov 1969] 54827/70 Headings B7A B7B and B7L [Also in Divisions B8 and E2] A cargo container for liquids or piecegoods incorporated in a lorry, railway truck, aircraft or a ship comprises rigid outer walls 16, a rigid base-plate 22, a rigid platform 26 and a sleeve of flexible, pleated and fluid impermeable material peripherally secured in a fluid tight fashion to the base-plate 22 and the platform 26 to constitute the side walls 24 of an expansible fluid-tight vessel within the container. In the embodiment shown with the vessel in an expanded condition the container is able to hold liquids whilst when the vessel is collapsed, and consequentially the platform 26 in a lowered position piecegoods may be stored and transported on the platform 26. In an alternative arrangement the sleeve is arranged within the container so that it may be collapsed longitudinally of the container. In the collapsed state of the vessel, the platform 26 is spaced from the base-plate 22 by pillars 30. Uniformly spaced tie belts (80, Fig. 6) are secured to reinforced outwardly directed portions of the pleats. The vessel may be maintained in its expanded condition by engagement between twist locks and slots provided in the platform 26 and in a flange portion 42 secured to the outer walls 16, (Fig. 8); alternatively (Figs. 9-11) bolts passing through holes in the outer walls 16 may threadedly engage the platform 26. Furthermore by the suitable positioning of holes in the outer walls 16 the vessel may be supported in a partially expanded condition. This latter result may also be achieved by providing bracing members twist locks (Fig. 7) for engagement in slots in the platform 26 and the flange portion 42. Bracing members, each comprising three parts 50, 52, 54 and a jack, may also-be used to retain the platform 26 in its lowermost position. The container includes a liquid inlet pipe and an air escape pipe 70. A door (78 Fig. 1) or tailgate is provided in an outer wall of the container. The fluid tight seals are effected by clamping the sleeve to the base-plate 22 and the platform by inflatable members 124, 151. The container may have a substantially rectangular (as shown) or circular horizontal cross-section.
