1296858 Detecting hydrocarbon leaks NORTHGATE INSTRUMENTS Ltd 28 Nov 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 58399/69 Heading G1S [Also in Divisions B1 and H1] A hydrocarbon e.g. oil, detector comprises a perforated casing 5 containing discs 9, e.g. of synthetic plastics, which swell on contact with the hydrocarbon to close electrical contacts 14 to activate an alarm signal, e.g. bell or light. Abutting faces of the discs 9 have capillary grooves to increase the hydrocarbon contact area. The distance between the contacts 14 and the discs 9 may be adjusted by a bush 11 and lock nut 12. An abutment stem 10a permits manual compression of the discs for circuit testing. The electrical contacts 14 may be enclosed in a sealed end portion of the casing 5. The detector may be attached to an oil tank or pit floor by a flanged support 8.
