Abstract
1294820 Gas turbine engines - fuel systems ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 17 June 1971 28368/71 Heading F1G The invention relates to a drain system for a gas turbine engine in which fuel or other liquid drained from the engine may be forced back into the engine immediately prior to starting the engine. In the system shown, the fuel inlet manifold 17 is connected through line 20 and valve 22 to a drain tank, valve 22 being normally closed but opened upon engine shut-down so that fuel drains from the manifold to the drain tank. The drain tank comprises a piston or diaphragm 23, the space above the diaphragm being connected to the starting air line 18, downstream of the control valve 26 so that at starting, the diaphragm is urged downwardly, so that the fuel is forced from the drain tank through the line 20 and open valve 22 back to the fuel manifold. Once the engine starts the valve 22 is closed. An outlet is provided from the drain tank to a dump line 24, the outlet being closed upon initial movement of the diaphragm such that if the engine is stopped during aircraft flight and then re-started without the use of the starter the drainage fuel is dumped overboard. The engine is started by means of a compressed air motor.
