Abstract

1294337 Ion-exchange strengthened glass A T RANSON (Owens-Illinois Inc) 5 Nov 1969 54110/69 Heading C1M An article of glass, crystallizable glass or glass-ceramic containing an alkali metal oxide is strengthened by contact with a non-polar, non-ionic medium containing a salt of a different alkali metal with an organic acid, at an elevated temperature and for a time such that surface ion exchange occurs, removing the salt and cooling the article. Alkali metal ions in the glass may be replaced by larger or smaller ions. Li may be replaced by Na at below the strain point. The ion exchange may be at 200-550‹ C. for at least 3 hours. The salt-containing medium may comprise an organic vehicle, e.g. paraffin hydrocarbon oil or wax, aromatic polynuclear hydrocarbons (e.g. diphenyl) or aromatic ethers (e.g. diphenyl oxide). The organic acid salt may be a salt of, e.g., formic, acetic, propionic, caproic, neodecanoic, stearic, benzoic, toluic or naphthenic acids, or of a sulphonic acid, e.g., of ethane sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, toluene sulphonic acid, or of the watersoluble or oil-soluble sulphonic acids obtained by sulphuric acid treatment of hydrocarbon oils. A range of compositions with which the ion exchanger is used is, in percentages by weight: SiO 2 35-88; M 2 O (alkali metal) 1-48; Al 2 O 3 0-40; CaO 0-15; MgO 0-28; BaO 0-15; SrO 0-15; B 2 O 3 0-15; ZrO 2 0-25; TiO 2 0-12; SnO 2 0-2; P 2 O 5 0-10; As 2 O 5 0-3; Sb 2 O 5 0-3; the alkali metal oxides of Li, K, Rb or Cs having a maximum of 25. Many patents are referred to for other glass and glassceramic compositions.
