Abstract
1292216 Rolling lined cylinders and rings F D TIMMERMANS 21 Jan 1970 2823/70 Addition to 1262160 Headings B3A and B3M A method of rolling a cylinder of one metal 13 internally lined with a softer metal 12 comprises rolling it between internal and external rolls 15, 14 respectively to stretch the internal layer to such an extent that when the rolled cylinder is cut longitudinally it opens out to a substantially flat configuration. The roll pressure on the inner surface is smaller than that on the outer and this is achieved by making the diameter of the roll 15 larger than that of the roll 14. The cylinder, which is of steel lined with lead-bronze, is heated to 500-600‹ C. and the roll 15 is maintained at a lower temperature than the roll 14 by water or oil cooling. The lined cylinders may be transported in pairs by electromagnetic grabs on to a pair of inner rolls and after rolling, the pair of cylinders are placed by the grabs on to a conveyer belt. The rolled cylinders are cut along any weld that may be present and the sheet obtained may be used, either with or without further hot rolling, to make bearing shells as described in parent Specification.
