Abstract

1287403 Adjustable steering columns STANDARD-TRIUMPH MOTOR CO Ltd 8 Sept 1969 [7 Sept 1968] 42678/68 Heading B7H A vehicle has a steering column (Fig. 1) including an upper portion (Fig. 3) adjustable in inclination about a lower portion and releasably lockable thereto, adjustment being effected by moving the upper portion about a pivot axis passing centrally through a universal coupling between upper and lower steering shafts and wherein adjustable mounting means are provided for supporting the lower portion at a selected inclination and position relative to the end of the lower steering shaft remote from the coupling. The upper portion comprises a housing 17 and upper steering shaft 14 connected by Hookes joint 22 to a shaft 24 forming an upper portion of the lower steering shaft. Pins 44, whose axes are aligned and pass through the centre of joint 22, form the pivot axis of the upper portion of the column relative to its lower portion. A knob 46, acting on opposed sides of housing 17 and plates 43 secured to housing 41 of the column lower portion, through a spacer 52 and nut 48, is used to lock the upper portion to the lower. The lower column portion comprises shaft portions 24 and 27 secured together by splines preventing their relative rotation but permitting axial extension of the length of the lower column portion. Shaft portion 27 is secured to the vehicle body part 31 through the intermediary of a nylon grommet 32 permitting limited movement of the shaft about axes normal to that of the grommet, but precluding axial movement of the shaft. At a point remote from the grommet a knob 57 is provided for clamping the lower column portion to the vehicle body. The vehicle body is formed with slots 61 permitting the column lower portion to incline relative to the body about a centre at the grommet 32. Axial slots 62 in housing 41 permit extension of the length of lower column portion. Friction material may be provided at the several clamping points of the column.
