Abstract
1286622 Luminescent materials and uses thereof NUCLEAR ENTERPRISES Ltd 2 Sept 1969 [22 Aug 1968] 40209/68 Heading C4S An organic solution scintillator comprises an aromatic polymeric plastics solvent carrying at least 10 grams/litre (e.g. 10 to 60 or 20 to 50) of a solute of fluorescence decay time not exceeding 2 nanoseconds and fluorescence quantum yield of the order of unity, such that the scintillator has a characteristic scintillation pulse width at half maximum intensity not exceeding 2 nanoseconds. Plastics solvents may be polystyrene, polyvinyl toluene or polyvinylxylene or mixtures of copolymers thereof. The solute may be 2 - phenyl - 5 - (4 - biphenylyl) - oxiadiazole (PBD) butyl PBD, iso-propyl PBD, an alkyl derivative of PBD, an oxazole or oxiadiazole derivative, substituted oligophenylene, diphenyl stilbene or a mixture thereof. Ionizing radiation detection and use with photomultiplier and other light sensing devices is exemplified.
