Abstract

128,601. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. Aug. 2, 1917 Ordnance design; breech mechanism.-Relates to non-recoiling guns in which the barrel is formed of a rear movable portion detachably connected to a fixed forward portion by interrupted threads or collars, and consists, mainly, in arranging for the rear barrel portion to engage threads or collars on the outside of the front-barrel portion, so that the rear of the front barrel may be brought flush with the mouth of the cartridge chamber. The invention also covers means for inserting and retaining the cartridge and extracting the empty case. Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to the recoilless gun described in Specification 126,025, in which the rear barrel portion B is unlocked, moved rearwards, and swung aside about the axis of a shaft b with respect to the fixed barrel portion A. An adapter D screwed to the barrel B has internal interrupted threads engaging corresponding threads on the outside of the barrel A, and a projection D<1> having an incline D<1x>, Fig. 11, for operating, during the opening swing of the barrel B, the pivoted rolling extractor E mounted in the rear face of the front barrel A. The projection D' also carries a spring plunger D<2> for retaining the newly-inserted cartridge in the position shown in Fig. 13, and an incline d' for pushing the cartridge home during the closing swing of the barrel B.
