Abstract
1285782 Optical systems PLESSEY CO Ltd 2 Feb 1970 [4 Feb 1969] 5922/69 Heading G2J An optical system comprises a bi-refringent plate 2 to separate two mutually perpendicularly plane polarized light rays E, O, a rotator 4 to rotate each of their planes of polarization through substantially 90 degrees, and a bi-refringent plate 6 which is orientated so that any astigmatic effect produced by the plate 2 tends to be corrected by the plate 6. The E ray at plate 2 is deflected. vertically and two mutually perpendicular components thereof are thus subjected to different deflections so that the ray exhibits astigmatism. The O-ray, not being deflected, exhibits no astigmatism. The plate 6 is orientated at 90 degrees to plate 2 so that after passing through the rotator 4 (which may be a half-wave plate) and plate 6, each E ray component will have been subjected to the same total deflection thus any astigmatism is cancelled. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the path lengths of the E and O rays are equalized by auxiliary bi-refringent plates (26), (66) placed adjacent plates 2, 6 respectively to introduce deflections in the O ray only. In both embodiments the emerging E and O rays may be used in a split angle digital light deflector or in systems producing holograms.
