Abstract

1281318 Cans CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 19 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 26942/71 Heading B8D The integral bottom wall of an aluminium can body 5 is formed with an inwardly and upwardly inclined chime 16 joined to an outwardlydomed central bottom wall portion 20 by an annular bead 18 to increase the buckling resistance of the bottom wall as compared to conventional can ends. The thickness of the bottom wall is uniform in the finished product but, prior to forming the chime and bead, Fig. 1, not shown), increases from the centre towards the periphery. The angle of inclination of the chime to the body wall is in the range 30 to 60 degrees, preferably 40 degrees, and limiting ranges of the parameters D2, R3 and R6 in terms of the outside can diameter D1 are specified.
