Abstract

1279803 Tobacco smoke filters MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 24 Sept 1969 [30 Oct 1968] 51520/68 Addition to 1122661 Heading A2C A tobacco smoke filtering element comprises a three-dimensional structure of a multiplicity of interconnecting thermoplastic fibre elements which are aligned substantially in a similar direction and of which some have cross-sections that are branched. The elements of the fibre assembly are interconnected to form an integral structure without use of adhesive by e.g. a process as disclosed in Specification 1114151 (see Division Dl) in which an extruded, foamed thermoplastic resin material is drawn so that it becomes orientated essentially in one direction and then subjected to forces such that the walls of the foam are broken down to produce the three dimensional structure of interconnecting elements. The thermoplastic material is an organic polymer that is a resin (other than a polyvinyaromatic resin) or a regenerated natural fibre material or a fibreforming derivative thereof, and is capable of being formed into an extruded foam. It may be a polymer or a copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, other than a vinylaromatic monomer. The monomer may be an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, a nitrile such as acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, vinyl or vinylidine chloride, or a vinyl or acrylate ester such as vinyl acetate or ethyl acrylate methyl methacrylate. A hydrocarbon monomer may be a mono-olefin, a diene, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene, a pentene, a hexene, or butadiene. A copolymer may include a constituent such as a vinyl halide to impart a degree of flame retardance. The thermoplastic material may also be a mixture of two or more polymers or copolymers e.g. an ethylene-propylene copolymer and a P.V.C., or it may be a polyamide, polyurethane, polylactam or polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate. Various cellulose derivatives, collagen and fibre-forming regenerated groundnut protein are also specified as suitable.
