Abstract

1279322 Coating surfaces ROLLAB AB 5 June 1969 [5 June 1968] 28406/69 Heading B2L [Also in Divisions B3 and E2] A method of treating or observing a surface normally in contact with a gaseous fluid such as ambient air, comprises applying to the surface a hollow body 2 defining a chamber which is open adjacent the surface, the hollow body supporting a treating or observing tool or instrument (not shown), continuously sucking gaseous fluid (by a suction fan) from within the hollow body to create and maintain a partial vacuum within the hollow body so as to urge and retain the hollow body against the surface in opposition to the force of gravity, and causing the hollow body to travel across the surface while the treatment or observation is effected by the tool or instrument. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the body carries two wheel assemblies 3, 4 each consisting of four wheels, one set being for allowing the body to travel in one direction and the other set for travel in a direction at right angles to the first direction. The body has a sealing strip 9 around its opening to engage the surface although it is stated that there is no need for a tight seal between the strip 9 and surface since this would render the operation of the apparatus difficult. The wheel assemblies are driven by a motor 5. The tool can be a brush, a blast nozzle or a paint spray gun, the instrument can be a sensing rod, a probe, or a television camera; operation of the tool or instrument can be governed by a control panel remote from the apparatus by means of a cable or via a radio link or a programming unit can be provided in the apparatus. The tool or instrument can be disposed either inside or outside the body. An alternative construction is described (Fig. 4) in which there are three rollers 10, 11, 12 supported between two side plates 13 the rollers being in contact with each other and two of them being in contact with the surface to form the chamber, the plates 13 are provided with sealing strips and the fan 7 (not shown) is provided in the chamber. One of the rollers contains the motor 5 for driving the rollers. The plates mount a wheel assembly.
