Abstract
1277209 Nuclear fuel UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 3 Oct 1969 [14 Oct 1968] 48690/68 Heading G6C Nuclear fuel particles are bonded together into an agglomerate by means of fused silica; the agglomerate is porous and may be cooled by the passage of coolant through the pores. Uranium dioxide particles may be coated with a multilayer fission product-retaining coating of which the outer layer is silicon carbide, a layer of amorphous silica applied, and the particles heated in a mould to 1500-1600 C. so that the silica becomes viscous to join the particles together and form a coherent silica coating. Other bonding materials referred to are SiO 2 - Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -CaO, SiO 2 -MgO, and SiO 2 -TiO 2 . Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 998,387.
