Abstract
1276458 Making aerofoil sections and turbine blades CYCLOPS CORP 20 March 1970 [12 May 1969 10 Sept 1969] 13628/70 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions B7 E1 F1 F2 and F3] A hollow member comprises at least two connected components which are joined together to merge smoothly into each other, the components each having an enlarged recessed end portion which mates with and has a connection to an end portion of another or the other component, the latter end portion being neither enlarged nor recessed, the connection being spaced from the extreme end of the enlarged recessed end portion. The hollow member may be a blade for a propeller, turbine, torque converter, or helicopter rotor; a wing or missile fin; or a structural member to support such parts. When the hollow member constitutes an aerofoil such as a turbine blade, the latter comprises in one arrangement components 11, 12 having respectively enlarged recessed end portions 13, 14 and portions 15, 16 which are neither enlarged nor recessed, the components being joined by welding or brazing. The aerofoil may contain a filler material (39, Fig. 9, not shown) of lower density than the metal components and of high thermal conductivity. An internal supporting rib may be provided either in the form of an insert (25, Fig. 7, not shown) or as a recessed enlargement (35, Fig. 8, not shown) integral with a wall component (30). In the latter arrangement the aerofoil comprises three components (29, 30, 31) only two of which (29, 30) have recessed enlargements. Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) illustrate the construction applied to a three component missile fin and Figs. 12 to 17 (not shown) to structural support members of T, I, U and other section. The components may be formed by precision rolling, extrusion, or deep drawing and may be cut to provide a longitudinal taper of the hollow member.
