One or other of a pair of resilient friction cones 25, 26 on a shaft 17 driven continuously in one direction, via a belt 14 from a motor-gear-box unit 11-13, is selectively engaged electromagnetically with one or other of a pair of bevel friction wheels 23, 24 respectively fast with a pair of rollers 22 having parallel axes about which a web 21 of a document copying machine can be wound, the shaft 17 being axially moved by one or other of a pair of solenoids SOL-1, SOL-2, via springs 28 and a lever 27 to frictionally engage one or other-of the cones 25, 26 with its associated bevel wheel 23, 24 to drive the web 21 in one or other direction. The belt 14 drives the shaft 17 via a pulley 15 slidably splined thereon.
