Abstract

1,274,229. Hot pressed silicon nitride. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Oct. 17, 1969 [Dec. 11, 1968], No.58885/68. Heading C7D. Fully densified hot pressed Si 3 N 4 is heated to a temperature sufficient to convert α Si 3 N 4 to the # form. The heating is effected either in the same hot press die for at least 10 minutes at temperature or the compact is removed from the die and heated in a separate furnace. Optionally pressure may be exerted on the compact during the further heating. Si 3 N 4 containing 1% MgO was hot pressed at 1700‹C. and retained at temperature and pressure for periods exceeding 10 minutes.
