Abstract
1,272,645. Axial-flow fans. FOLKES BELTING CO., Ltd. Sept. 16, 1970 [Sept. 16, 1969], No.45626/69. Heading F1C. A fan, e.g. for a motor vehicle, has blades 2, Fig. 14, arranged to alter their pitch abruptly with changing temperature. The blades can be flexible to be responsive to aerodynamic forces exerted by the air-flow (i.e. responsive to fan speed), the particular temperature at which the abrupt pitch change occurs then being dependent on the applied aerodynamic forces. The pitch of the flexible blades increases with increasing ambient temperature and reduces with increasing aerodynamic forces. The abrupt pitch change is brought about by forming bulges 17, crimps or part-cylindrical depressions in the blades, or by forming the blades of bi-metallic material or of a material, e.g. nickel steel, having a different coefficient of expansion from the material, e.g. aluminium, of the radial arms to which they are attached. The abrupt pitch-changing characteristic of bi-metallic blades may be enhanced by curving the blades and thereafter bending over their outer edges 52 as shown in Fig.25, to restrain the blades in a substantially flat form until they are heated. The abrupt pitch changes of the respective blades of a multi-blade fan may occur at different temperatures.
