A device for winding microwire comprises a reciprocable multi-position turret head 1 having a plurality of winding spindles 3 which are connectable to a drive motor 4 by means of gears 18-22, and clutches 43, 44 such that the spindle 3 for carrying the bobbin 2 on which wire is to be wound, and the spindle 3 carrying the bobbin next to be wound, are rotated. The clutches 43, 44 are engaged or disengaged on rotation of the head 1 by axial movement within the spindles 3 of pins, the ends of which engage a non-rotating cam plate 46. Reciprocation of the turret head 1 by a hydraulic cylinder 10 operated by limit switches 7 provides traversing of the glasscovered microwire upon the bobbin 2, and rotation of the head is produced by a second hydraulic cylinder 11, engaging a ratchet wheel 9 when next the head reaches its innermost position after a signal from a counter 6 indicates that the bobbin is fully wound. On rotation of the head 1, the wire is caught between the next bobbin 2 and its boss 42, so that it is broken off as winding on this bobbin commences. The speed of winding may be adjusted between 5 and 800 metres per minute by controlling the motor 4 and charging from one ratio to the other of the twospeed gear train 18-22. Traverse speed is adjusted by means of throttle valves 16, 17 and the initial traverse on a bobbin may be longer than those of succeeding layers to provide a free end of the microwire for measurement. A number of time delay relays are provided in the control circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) to ensure that winding is not commenced on a new bobbin until glass capillary with an intact microwire core has been produced for a definite period, and that traversing is not commenced until intact wire has been produced for a further period. Waste capillary is thus wound up on the initial bobbin, and only intact wire is wound on subsequent bobbins.
