Abstract

1,269,788. N - Substituted - 1 - hydroxy - 2- naphthamides and their uses as cyan couplers. KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO. Ltd. 22 Oct., 1969 [24 Oct., 1968], No. 51868/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C4 and G2] The -invention comprises the compounds of the general formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen or a methyl group; R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1-16 carbon atoms; R 3 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1-18 carbon atoms; n is zero or 1; and X is a hydrogen atom, or a substituted or unsubstituted phenylazo group. These compounds may be prepared by reacting an amino acid with an appropriate naphthoic acid derivative and reacting the resulting intermediate as a potassium salt with an alkyl (of 1 to 18 carbon atoms) ester of an α-halogeno fatty acid. N-Dodecyloxycarbonyl - methoxycarbonylmethyl - 1 - hyhydroxy - 2 - naphthamide is prepared by the reaction of 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoylglycine with dodecyl - α - chloroacetate at a temperature of 95-100‹ C. The intermediate 1-hydroxy-2- naphthoyl glycine is obtained by treating glycine withphenyl-1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate; while dodecyl-α-chloroacetate is obtained by reacting α-chloroacetic acid and dodecyl alcohol. As representative compounds of the above formula there may be mentioned N-[1-(dodecyloxycarbonylmethoxycarbonyl) - ethyl] - 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthamide; N - dodecyloxycarbonyl - methoxycarbonylmethyl - 1 - hydroxy-4- chloro - 2 - naphthamide; N - [1 - dodecylcarbonyl - methoxycarbonyl) - ethyl] - 1 - hydroxy - 4 - (2 - acetylphenylazo) - 2 - naphthamide; and N - [2 - (dodecyloxycarbonylmethoxycarbonyl) - ethyl] - 1 - hydroxy - 4 - (2- ethoxycarbonylphenylazo)-2-naphthamide.
