In a betatron comprising an electromagnet 1 with an acceleration chamber 2 disposed between the electromagnetic polepieces 7 and a particle injector 3 with an electron emissive filament 4, a filament heating winding 6 is placed within the electromagnet in such a way that in operation there is induced in the winding an electrical current for heating the filament, which current flows directly through a circuit comprising only the filament-heating winding and the filament itself. This arrangement obviates the need for an auxiliary filament transformer.
