Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Aqueous printing ink compositions for use in printing on substrates such as paper, wood, ferrous or non-ferrous metals, α-olefin polymers, styrene polymers, acrylonitrile polymers, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyacetals, synthetic rubbers, phenol-aldehyde condensation polymers and epoxy resins comprise 5-30% by weight of a copolymer salt, 5-50% by weight of a pigment and 20-90% by weight of water, said copolymer salt being obtained by neutralising 30-100% of the carboxylic acid groups present in a copolymer of at least 80 mole% of at least one aliphatic α-olefin having up to 10 carbon atoms and 4-20 mole% at least one α, #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with an alkanolamine of the formula (R) N N(R'OH) x where y is 0, 1 or 2, x=3-y, R is H or C 1 -C 10 alkyl and R' is C 2 -C 10 alkylene. The copolymer salts may also include units of other monomers, e.g. methyl or ethyl (meth)acrylate, vinyl acetate and ethyl vinyl ether. Pigments specified are barium lithol, phthalocyanine blue or green, molybdate orange, benzidine yellow, chrome yellow, Victoria blue, carbon black and titanium dioxide. The inks may additionally include a solvent such as C 1 -C 6 aliphatic alcohols, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and glycol ethers. In Examples the inks are printed on paper, glassine paper, regenerated cellulose film with or without a polyvinylidene chloride coating, corona discharge-treated polyethylene film and uncoated food board stock. Ink films or prints may be applied, for example, by a wire wound rod or by using a flexographic press. In a modification, wherein the pigment is omitted from the compositions, the compositions can be used as overprint varnishes. Such varnishes may have incorporated therein a wax component, e.g. a modified microcrystalline petroleum wax in ethanol-shellac solution.
