Abstract
1,266,951. Pointing. GEORGE A. MITCHELL CO. 28 Feb., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 5295/69. Heading B3P. A tube or bar is pointed to allow subsequent drawing by forcing a succession of dies over its end. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 3A, a tube 64 containing a mandrel 112 is clamped between a stationary clamp 66 and a clamp 68 which is movable by an hydraulic cylinder 78 via linkage 88-100. The mandrel is retained in position by dimples formed in the tube 64 by the clamping operation. A die 118 carried by a cylinder 26 is forced to the left by hydraulic cylinders 46, 48 over the end of the tube 64, after which the tube end is further reduced indiameter by first moving a cylinder 28 carrying a die 120 and then a cylinder 30 carrying a die 122. In another embodiment, Fig. 6B, a first die 160 carried by a crosshead 154 is forced by an hydraulic cylinder over the end of a clamped tube 1. As the first die 160 is being forced over the tube, further crossheads 156, 158 each carrying a pointing die are urged into engagement with the tube end by a member 188, constantly biased to the left by an air cylinder, in order to prevent bowing of the pointed end. When the die 164 in the last crosshead 158 is moved over the tube end, the extreme end of the tube is directly engaged by the member 188. In a further embodiment (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), dies (244) are mounted by spring-loaded balls (242) in slots (238) of a rotary die holder (234) mounted on a crosshead (218). In operation, the uppermost die in the die holder (234) is forced over the tube end by moving the crosshead (218), after which the die is retracted, the die holder (234) rotated to bring the next die into position and the crosshead (218) again moved.
