Abstract
1,266,150. Aerating waste water; filtering. S. EDGECOMBE. 9 June, 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 42093/68. Headings B1C and B1D. [Also in Division Cl] Waste water (e.g. sewage) is aerated at such a rate and for such a time that there is substantially no build-up of sludge; the air flow is preferably at least 1.0 to 1.5 cubic feet of air (at NTP) per minute per 200 to 1,000 gallons of waste water. A treatment tank 27 contains a filter bag 37 into which the waste enters by pipe 36 and wherein it is aerated by diffusers 39. Effluent leaves by pipe 41 for further purification and recycling (see Division Cl). The filter bag 37 is preferably of polypropylene having a maximum pore size of 20 microns and the diffuser units have a pore size of 7 microns. A blanket of small pieces of plastic floats on the surface of the liquid to reduce swell. For some purposes aeration may take place in shallow tanks, the filter bag being omitted, see Figs. 7-10 (not shown). The invention is described with reference to domestic, institutional and marine water supply systems wherein the effluent is recycled (see Figs. 1-3, 5-6 and 14-17, not shown).
