Abstract

1,265,800. Phenylalkanoic acid derivatives. BOOTS CO. Ltd. 16 Oct., 1969 [5 Nov., 1968; 15 Nov., 1968], Nos. 52429/68 and 54385/68. Heading C2C. Novel compounds I in which R is H or CH3 may be prepared by the steps (a) reacting isobutyl vinyl ketone (which may be prepared in situ from a compound (CH 3 ) 2 CH-CH 2 -CO-CH 2 CH 2 NR 3 R 4 ) with CH 3 COCH(R o )COOR 1 , in which R o is H or R(R 2 )CH-, R 1 is an esterifying group and R 2 is COOR 1 , CN or CONH 2 , to give III (b) when R o in III is H reacting a metal derivative of this compound with R(R 2 )CH-X, in which X is I, Cl or Br, to give III in which R o is R(R 2 )CH- and (c) hydrolysing a compound III in which R o is R(R 2 )CH- to give I. The compounds III can be isolated. If a compound I is heated with an acid at 150-250‹ C. 4-isobutyl-phenyl-acetic or propionic acid is produced.
