Abstract

1,257,473. Tractive fluid. SUN OIL CO. 1 Nov., 1968 [1 Nov., 1967 (4)], No. 33304/71. Divided out of 1,257,472. Headings C4X and C5E. A power transmission system comprises a traction drive and as tractant therefor a hydrocarbon base stock comprising a per-hydrogenated oligomer of styrene, α- or #-methyl styrene or a mono- or dimethyl ring-substituted derivative thereof. Preferred per-hydrogenated oligomers are the dimers C 12 -C 29 di-(cyclohexyl) alkanes and C 16 -C 22 cyclohexyl hydrindans. The styrene monomers may be oligomerized using a H 3 PO 4 -BF 3 catalyst or the oligomers may be prepared by distilling in vacuo a commercial styrene polymer. An example describes the preparation of 1,3,3-trimethyl-1-phenylindane by cracking a polymer of α-methyl styrene of M.W. 685. An optional component of the base stock is a liquid polymer of a C 3 -C 8 olefin. Suitable additives for the tractant are high M.W. polyisobutylene, fluorinated polyolefins, an alkylene glycol pentaborate salt, super-based Ba dithiophosphoric acid, Ca alkyl phenates and Ca salts of mahogany acids.
