Abstract

1,256,401. I.C. engine cylinder heads; mounting spark-plugs. RUBERY, OWEN & CO. Ltd. June 11, 1970 [May 22, 1969], No. 26052/69. Heading F1B. A pair of inlet valves 11 and a pair of exhaust valves 12 are located on opposite sides of a plane which would contain the axis of the cylinder when the head is fitted to a cylinder and the axes of one pair of valves are located in a plane inclined at an angle between 5 degrees and 20 degrees to the plane containing the axes of the other pair. A tube 25 is inserted in the head between the valves to house a spark-plug 26. The inlet valves may be larger than the exhaust valves and the valves operated by respective cam-shafts 20 and 19 mounted in bearings on a carrier 21 bolted to the head. The inlet passages may be shaped to induce swirl in the gases entering the combustion chamber which may be formed partly in the piston crown. The tube 25 passes through a coolant space 28 and the spark-plug lead 36 is connected to the plug 26 by a spring 35 and a metal sleeve 34 in an insulating adaptor 33.
