Abstract

125,596. Dellwik, C., and Cutler, S. Aug. 30, 1916. Hydrogen.-In preparing hydrogen from a mixture of hydrogen and air, such as the waste gases from balloons, the mixture is used as the reducing-gas in the process of alternate reduction of iron oxide or other suitable material, and re-oxidation by means of steam with liberation of hydrogen. The mixture of hydrogen and air is passed into a gas-holder G and is circulated by a pump E through a closed circuit comprising the gasholder G, devices WS, ws which prevent a local explosion from spreading, a retort C containing iron oxide, and a scrubber SC. The circulation is continued until the gas becomes inactive. A supply of steam generated from the water condensed in the scrubber SC or from another source is then led into the retort C, and the hydrogen obtained is passed through a condenser K to a gas-holder H. If an explosion occurs in the retort C during the reduction, the safety-valve SV lifts, and water is forced from the water-seal vessel WS to form a second water-seal in the vessel ws.
