Abstract
1,251,592. Double panel structures, e.g. double glazing units. J. W. JOHNSON. 9 Jan., 1970 [10 Jan., 1969], No. 1639/69. Heading E1R. A double panel structure, e.g. a double glazing unit, comprises two panels 1 with confronting surfaces spaced from each other, at least one of the panels having a chamfered edge 6 (both panels thus shown) defining with the other panel a groove 6 with its apex directed inwardly and a wedging member 7 in the form of a belt of endless coil spring under tension disposed in the groove and pressed therein by an inflatable tube 3 (shown inflated) partly or wholly around the periphery of the panels to force the panels apart, the tube 3 preferably contacting and lying almost entirely in the groove in the deflated condition, with the glass sheets close together (not as shown) so that it begins to force the panels apart as soon as inflation begins. The taper of the groove may be 20 to 30 degrees. The wedge may be strengthened by a core 2 of plastics material and the member 7 may be of impervious material, a rubber ring, to provide a seal against entry of air into the space 10 as the panels move apart. A split frame 8 surrounds the unit within the outer frame 5 and the space between the frames 5 'and 8 is filled with glazing compound 4.
