A saw blade comprises a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth 12 and a plurality of slots 16 extending from the periphery of the blade. The slots are at a negative angle position with respect to the saw motion and to a radial line extending from the centre of the blade to the periphery thereof. The face of each tooth is at an angle α, which may be from 10 to 45 degrees, with a radial line of the blade and has an insert 13 welded to its front face, the insert being of hard metal, such as tungsten carbide, cobalt-steel alloy. The slots extend close to the position where collars grip the blade on a saw and facing elements of material similar to the inserts 13 and of the same width or slightly less are secured to the slots. The slots are at a negative angle from 1 to 40 degrees to the radial line. The elements 17 act to clear swarf from the kerf web by the blade. Holes 18 adjacent the slots relieve tension in the blade. The slots divide the saw into equal sectors so that, in use, each sector enters the cut along a predetermined line of cut regardless of lateral deflection induced by the preceding sector as it passes through the cut.
