Abstract
1,248,473. Bending; making clutch springs. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 15 Oct., 1969 [25 Oct., 1968], No. 50661/68. Headings B3A and B3E. A method of producing a friction clutch engaging load spring having an annular component of sheet spring metal, one of the radially inner and outer edges of the annular component being movable axially relative to the other to apply or release an axial load, comprises feeding spring metal strip 12 from a reel 11 between rollers 16 and along a circular path between bend rollers 14 and 15 so that successive pairs of bend rollers engage the edges of the strip 12 and bend the strip into a ring with the width of the strip lying radially of the ring. As the leading edge of the strip emerges from the last pair of rollers 16 it is diverted from the vertical so as to be directed alongside the portion of strip extending between feed-rollers 13 and the first pair of rollers 16. The feed rollers 13 are stopped just before the leading end of the strip returns to the first pair of rollers 16 and the single turn of strip severed from the remainder of the strip. The ends of the one turn coil are welded together so as to form a flat ring which is then coned by conventional methods. In a second embodiment the ends are joined by severing the edges so that one of its ends defines a tongue 17 and the other defines a notch 19. In a third embodiment the rollers 16 of each pair are arranged with their axes parallel to one another and at an angle to the vertical plane, the axes of each of the rollers 16 which engage one side surface of the strip 12 lying in a conical surface of revolution. Thus the closed ring formed by joining the ends together will have the required conical shape so that no additional operations will be necessary.
