Abstract

1,248,128. Copolymers. STAMICARBON N.V. 25 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 15618/69. Heading C3P. Transparent, thermostable copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing 4-methylpentene-1 and a vinyl halide at a pressure below 600 atmospheres. The vinyl halide may be vinyl chloride, bromide or fluoride and minor proportions of other monomers, e.g. vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters, acrylic and methacrylic compounds, vinyl ethers, styrene, vinyl pyridine, allyl compounds and maleic and fumaric esters, may also be present. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, solution, suspension or dispersion in the presence of peroxy, azo and redox catalysts, dispersing and suspending agents, and buffers. Fillers, plasticizers and other polymers may be incorporated and the products made into bottles, sheets and films. Examples describe the copolymerization of vinyl chloride and methylpentene in aqueous media in the presence of hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and (1 to 4, 7 and 8) di-(t.-butyl-4-cyclohexyl) percarbonate and azodiisobutyronitrile (5, 6 and 9) azodiisobutyronitrile and (11) lauryl peroxide. The products are compounded with organotin and organic cadmium/barium stabilizers and glycerylmonoricinoleate as lubricant.
