Abstract

Relates to a system in which three fixed and spaced receivers are utilized to locate each of several mobile units by determining the relative times of arrival of pulses from each mobile unit. According to one aspect of the invention, each mobile unit transmits in an assigned time slot and the time slot at a mobile unit is synchronized with a fixed system by a correction signal from the fixed system which is provided with an accurate clock. According to another aspect of the invention the mobile units are of two kinds (e.g. police vehicles and other vehicles) in the first of which timing means periodically actuates the pulse emitter and in the second of which a transmitter is actuated to transmit pulses at a higher repetition rate than in the first kind and a switch renders the actuator operative. Coded pulse groups of different kinds may be sent from the two kinds of mobile units.
