Abstract
1,244,401. Hydroxybenzoic acids. SUN OIL CO. 7 Feb., 1969 [8 Feb., 1968; 8 Jan., 1969], No. 6668/69. Heading C2C. A benzoic acid or a salt or alkyl ester thereof having 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group having attached to the ring carbon atom 0-3 methyl or halo groups, wherein the groups may be the same or different, and having at least two unsubstituted ring carbon atoms adjacent each other is hydroxylated to form the corresponding 2,3-dihydroxylated benzoic acid by a process which comprises (a) establishing a growth of microorganism cells in a nutrient medium, the microorganism being a Nocardia species normally incapable of hydroxylating the benzoic acid compound but being capable of induction of such activity (b) inducing the species by incorporating into the medium under aerobic conditions a compound which is an aromatic or halogenated aromatic compound having at least one aromatic ring with not more than one halo substituent attached thereto and which contains two unsubstituted adjacent ring carbon atoms capable of inducing the Nocardia cells to hydroxylate the benzoic acid, and (c) thereafter subjecting the benzoic acid compound to the action of the induced cells under aerobic fermentation conditions.
