Abstract

1,243,706. Pulsed heating in compression moulding. J. C. PARKER. 18 July, 1969 [19 July, 1968], No. 36264/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B3 and C7] Weldable particles such as metals, oxides or metallized ceramics are bonded together by applying pulsed electrical energy of at least 1,000,000 amps/sq. inch for about a millisecond, to the compacted particles. Compaction is effected by a controlled pressure pulse or pulses in synchronism with the pulsed electrical energy. As shown in Fig. 2, pressure platens 12 and 13 also apply the pulsed electrical energy to the powder 11 in die 16. The powder is initially compacted by lower platen 13, e.g. at 3000 p.s.i. A pulsed pressure with a peak value of 20,000 p.s.i. is superimposed on the compact by means of pressure transformer 18 operated by power switch 26. The process controller 25 times the electronic switch 24 to pass pulsed electrical energy to the compact via 23 and 21 as a step function approx. 90 degrees or 4À1 milliseconds after the initiation of the pressure. The powders, e.g. Fe, Ti may be mixed with glass or boron fibres or filaments. Wire mesh may be used as reinforcement and the powders may be bonded to sheets, skins or membranes, e.g. stainless steel or Ti 14, 15 in Fig. 2. The atmosphere during pressing may be a vacuum, inert, carburizing or decarburizing. The pressure pulses may be supplied by hydraulic actuators or detonating devices in place of the pressure transformer. Continuous lengths of sintered material may be formed by pressing together previously bonded compacts.
