Abstract
1,242,330. Sheet glass. SARATOVSKY FILIAL GOSUDARSTVENNOGO NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUT STEKLA. 16 June, 1969, No. 30379/69. Heading C1M. A ribbon of sheet glass is produced by feeding molten glass 1 on to the surface of molten metal 2 (e.g. Tin) in a bath 3, allowing the glass to form a flat ribbon (zone A) and then extending the ribbon by moving it over obstacle 9 protruding above the molten metal surface obstacle 9 being a standing wave of molten metal produced by electromagnetic forces (from electrical inductors 7 and 8). The glass ribbon may thus be reduced in thickness. The wave height may be 50-80 mm. Zone A may be at 1050-900‹ C. and zone B at 900-700‹ C. Tensile force to extend the glass and reduce its thickness, e.g. from 6.35 mm. to 2 mm., may be applied by drawing device 11.
